About Carpet Beetles:
Carpet Beetles are common household pests. Carpet beetle larvae differ greatly from adult beetles. Carpet Beetle larvae will hatch and begin to feed on the materials in which they were lay. Carpet beetles’ larvae tend to be fuzzy, and will shed the hair follicles into the linens causing itching and sometimes skin irritation. Washing the linens does help, yet occasionally there is still irritation of the skin depending on the person. Carpet beetle larvae are typically 1/8 to ¼ inch in size.
Where to Look for Carpet Beetles:
The adult beetles will fly in through cracks and openings to the exterior around window frames. Once inside the Beetles infest and lay their eggs in linens, wool, fur, felt, silk, feathers, skins, and even leather. The carpet beetle larvae can digest keratin, which is uncommon for most pests. Cotton, and synthetics such as polyester and rayon are typically safe unless part of a wool blend or layered with spills, or food of some sort.
Self Treatment Control Methods:
Sealing cracks vacuuming consistently and laundering linens is the best way to combat carpet beetles. You may also steam any favorable fabrics that may be susceptible to larvae feeding.
