American Cockroaches

American Cockroaches

About:

American cockroaches are sometimes referred to as “Water Bug” or “Palmetto Bug”, as they are reddish-brown in color and about 1.5 inches or longer. They have wings, males being longer than females, but usually do not fly unless the weather is hot, in which they fly from shelter to shelter. When young, the nymphs are grey-brown as they develop changing to the adult reddish-brown. American roaches prefer to diet on decaying organic matter, however will eat anything due to their scavenging nature. They enjoy starchy items like book bindings, and wall paper, bread crumbs on the floor, chips crumbs, etc. Females may have 14-16 egg capsules which hatch in roughly 50-55 days into 1/4” nymphs.

Where to Look for American Cockroaches:

American cockroaches prefer to lay their egg capsules in dark moist areas. As the temperature cool outside the American roaches become pests for our homes coming in where they please through ducting, cracks, crevices, wall voids, and sewer connections. They are typically found near moist areas of the kitchen, plumbing, bathrooms, or crawl spaces. In the colder climates they are found in the steam heat tunnels, or in large institutional buildings. They may also commonly congregate near sewers, garbage, and sump pumps. Nymphs can be found in basements, floor drains, in corners of drain areas, and around bathtubs.

Self Treatment Control Methods:

Keep areas in kitchen, and other mentioned harborage areas free of moisture, food and debris of organic or decaying material. Keep a clean kitchen and ensure underneath your home is free of moisture. Seal any cracks and crevices to prevent pests from entering from the outside.
